Arts and Culture of Malang

Malang has a rich diversity of arts and culture, starting from 

their dance,  food, and handicrafts.


Dance: Tari Topeng Malang



“Tari Topeng Malang” can be define as moving the body in rhythm, that is led by the music. The dancers uses a mask that looks like a human face. This dance is originated from Malang.  

Kedungmonggo, a village on the valley of Gunun Kawi, is one of the place that preserve and spreads the "Tari Topeng Malang" dance 

Malang has been externally influenced with the Hindu-Javanese culture around the Kedungmonggo village, putting in mind that the existence of "Mask Dance" started from the Hinduism rituals.

In Malang, there is a carving tradition that is originated from Malang, that it is know that the Malang Mask is an old historical art, older than the existence of the Malang City itself. 

These mask has been introduced since the Gajayana dynasty, where the carvers has passed on their skill to their families. A long time ago, appreciation of the mask is shown within a performance during weddings, inaugurations, and other events that involves the higher status people.
